The Career Medical Assistant: What The Job Entails

If you want to be a career medical assistant, it is important to first understand what you'll actually be doing and the type of education you need to get the job you want. It really is a good choice to go for a job in the medical field, as this is a profession that is always growing and always in need of qualified workers in all areas. Careers medical assistant professionals enjoy are fast paced and vary from day to day or even minute to minute as far as what you will be doing. If you enjoy staying busy this job might be perfect for you.

For example, medical assistants do all kinds of things in the span of a workday. They might perform scheduling for patients, answer phones, file records, handle accounting, file insurance claims for patients and much more. This is the clerical side of the job. On the other side, a medical assistant might draw blood, give vaccinations, take samples to the lab, sterilize medical instruments, take temperature and blood pressure readings and consult with patients regarding various medical issues.

So when you are getting your education at a vocational school or two year college you will be taking many different classes that range from anatomy to typing. There are also hands-on tasks you will do in a laboratory or clinical setting. For students attending an accredited school an internship is ideal because there you can learn at the side of an actual medical assistant and get real world training that cannot be replicated in any classroom.

As a career, medical assistant is certainly a good choice. The pay is reasonable and on average about $25,000 per year but this is a speculative figure only. Your actual salary will depend on your credentials, where you work, how much your workplace pays, how much experience you have and even what state you live in. If you want to earn more, many employers have tuition reimbursement programs as part of their benefit package for students who want to further their position, for example you might decide to become a physician's assistant, licensed practical nurse or registered nurse. Beyond that, there is nurse practitioner, which is a position where you would perform many duties doctors handle such as diagnosing patients and writing prescriptions.
