What is the Medical Assistant Association?
Anyone who works as a medical assistant or who is pursuing their education in this field should join a medical assistant association. The most popular and well known being the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) which was formed in the 1950's. This association has all kinds of helpful resources for assistants and those who think they might want to become assistants. For example, on their site they explain the personal qualities you need to be successful in this line of work. For example, you should be what is known as a people person and have the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
The AAMA also encourages medical assistants to become certified. Before you can become certified, you must graduate from an accredited medical assistant program that meets the criteria outlined on the AAMA website. Then, you will need to take the CMA exam. This exam is only given three times a year in January, June and October. There are over 200 official testing locations so you should have one close to you or within a reasonable distance. With a little research you can find tons of preparatory materials to help you get ready for the exam.
So why should you get certified in the first place if you don't have to? As the AAMA explains, it gives you an edge over other medical assistants looking for work who are not certified. Employers definitely look at this, and if it comes down to two applicants with equal qualifications and one is certified, that is likely the person to be hired. You can even go on after you've had enough on the job experience to become a Registered Medical Assistant which is an even more prestigious title but also a harder exam to qualify for and pass.
Joining a medical assistant association like the AAMA is highly recommended for anyone working as a medical assistant or studying to become one. These types of associations give you credibility, connections and lots of information about your profession. As the medical world changes quickly it is important to stay up to date on what is going on, and joining an association can help you do that. You might even find a job through membership, as some doctors check for CMA professionals through the AAMA.
